Throughout my entire education, from kindergarten on through university, only two books on my required reading lists featured women as the main characters. Two! Most of my own favorite movies have very few female characters. Women make up half of the world's population, and our stories are rarely told. Whether it is being erased from history, or having entire years go by without a single female lead in a film, the result is women (and men) being starved of incredible stories and characters that could entertain and delight them.
Although the entertainment industry across all mediums have a lot of work to do to have equal representation of women, there are some amazing stories out there already. This blog seeks do the hard work by bringing you films, TV shows, and books that have well written and prominent female characters in them.
And, because I know how important representation in to children, I have a special section dedication to material created for children. Not that those aren't for adults either! Some of my favorite movies of all time are "children's" movies.
